Some steps for Starting a Business:
- Name your business! Check the united states patent and trademark office to make sure the name you choose isn't already registered. Also, check NY states corporation and business entity database at https://apps.dos.ny.gov/publicInquiry/
- Learn what regulations apply to your business by using the New York State Business wizard: https://www.businessexpress.ny.gov/app/bw/startnewbusiness
- Create a business plan - tips and samples are available https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/plan-your-business/write-your-business-plan
- Obtain a federal EIN - click https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/apply-for-an-employer-identification-number-ein-online
- Open a business bank account (you will need your EIN to open your bank account)
- Join our Chamber of Commerce! A great resource for information and networking
- Make sure to check with the proper county and local government offices to determine if special requirements exist for your type of business

Women’s Enterprise Development Center:
New York State is celebrating AAPI Heritage Month with a special MWBE certification initiative! Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced the launch of the AAPI Enterprise Empowerment certification initiative - from 5/1/25 through 6/13/25. Please see the press release for more details. [LINK].
The above initiative, managed by Empire State Development’s MWBE Division, is a collaboration between ESD and free business advisor service centers (“Center”). The Centers provide advice to business owners in many aspects of running a business, include help firms prepare for their MWBE certification. With the support and guidance of a Center’s business advisor, the application that the Division receives is generally more complete which reduces the time to reach a final determination of the application.
