Orange-Ulster BOCES (OU BOCES) held the Odyssey of the Mind Region 5 Tournament on Sat., Mar. 9 as 68 teams from 12 school districts in Orange and Dutchess Counties came together to compete.
Odyssey of the Mind is an intellectual contest of creativity, resourcefulness, mental acuity, and expression. The purpose of the competition is to focus on creative problem-solving using a team approach. It is based on the concept that “mind games” can be played with as much enthusiasm and competitive spirit as athletic games.
The problems were divided into five categories that include both long-term and spontaneous problem-solving. The students solved a long-term problem chosen from one of five categories which included: OMER to the Rescue, Again; Hide In Plain Sight; Classics… Leonardo’s Workshop; Structure Toss; and Opposites Distract. Teams were scored on a combination of points earned from long-term solutions, spontaneous solutions and style.
Among the 2019 first place winners was the Warwick Valley Middle School team. For the problem #1 category, OMER to the Rescue, Again, the team from the Warwick Valley Middle School won first place in Division II. For the problem #2 category, Hide In Plain Sight, the team from the Warwick Valley Middle School won first place in Division II.
The winning teams will advance to the New York State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament which will be held on Sat., Mar. 23 at SUNY Binghamton.
