Nearly 300 of Warwick’s youngest residents do not get enough to eat.
When school is in session, these children receive free meals but on weekends they would be hungry if not for Backpack Snack Attack, a non-profit outreach program of the Warwick Reformed Church that has been sending food home in backpacks since 2009.
Each week every child receives more than a dozen nutritional snacks at a cost of just $5 per child.
Fund raising and donations support the program, which is why the Warwick Town Board voted unanimously at its regular meeting on May 9 to make August “Backpack Snack Attack Back to School Month” throughout the town.
Representatives of Warwick Masons Lodge #544 presented Shirley Puett, the program’s director, with a check for $1,000. Backpack Snack Attack has zero administrative expenses and its annual costs are approximately $80,000.
